The Pursuit of Excellence
Established in 1969, Mitchelton Wines has recently celebrated fifty years since the first vines were planted on its Nagambie Estate by entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine and dedicated industry expert Colin Preece. Today, the winery is known for its spectacular surrounds of the sprawling Goulburn Valley, in addition to its delectable seasonal menu and impressive wine varieties.
The family-owned and -operated business has recently been awarded a 5-star rating in the 2020 Halliday Wine Companion. The accolade establishes the winery as a producer of high-quality, premium varieties. Five wines were awarded 95 points or above, including the inaugural release of its luxury wine – the 2016 Toolleen Single Vineyard Heathcote Shiraz. The contemporary varietal wines from the Preece collection also performed strongly, with the cabernet sauvignon and the shiraz rated 92 and 91 respectively.
“It brings an enormous sense of pride for our team to be recognised as a 5 star winery,” chief winemaker Andrew Santarossa says. “These ratings help us stand out from the crowd, and for a small but rapidly growing wine business, it instils confidence among our customers and tourism partners in the quality regional varietal wines we are crafting here at Mitchelton.”
