This year, Mitchelton Wines celebrates 50 years since its first planting in 1969. Founded by Colin Preece and Ross Shelmerdine, the estate was purchased by the Ryan family in 2011 with the vision to create an iconic wine, food, art and hospitality destination within central Victoria. The recent revitalisation of Mitchelton Wines has seen it transform into a bucket list destination for wine lovers across the country. In addition to the stunning landscape, it is also home to an award-winning cellar door, as well as a beautiful 58-room hotel and day spa, restaurant and Aboriginal art gallery.
Designed by Hecker Guthrie, the hotel and day spa are the epitome of country chic. Featuring panoramic views of the Goulburn River and encompassing vineyards, the hotel lobby is finished with Italian marble, American oak joinery, which was made on-site, and a privately commissioned photography series of horses from nearby farms. It really is the perfect place to relax before retreating to your room.
During your stay, ensure you have a wander through the incredible collection in the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art, which features work produced by indigenous artists from around the country and is housed in the underground cellar on the estate.
Enjoy region-inspired dishes and wine selection at Muse Restaurant or a more casual lunch at The Provedore, which highlights local craftsmanship, artisan design and fine produce, with gifts from local producers available to purchase in addition to the wide range of wines available from the cellar door.
With 31 wines within its portfolio, Mitchelton Wines specialises in riesling, chardonnay, marsanne and shiraz. Its estate vineyards include 113 hectares in Nagambie and 13 hectares in Heathcote, from which a variety of wines are sourced.
Mitchelton Wines is also the proud recipient of multiple awards, including Top Gold, with a score of 96 points at the 2018 Victorian Wine Show, as well as a Best Riesling trophy for its Blackwood Park Riesling. Its cellar door was also awarded Star Cellar Door in 2018 by Gourmet Traveller WINE.
⇐ Mitchelton Blackwood Park Riesling
Mitchelton Wines’ legacy and most-awarded wine is derived from the estate vineyard in Nagambie. Citrus blossom and lime zest aromas fill the glass, while the palate remains fine with nuanced layers of delicate citrus, tropical fruit and wet slate minerality.
⇐ Mitchelton Heathcote Shiraz
This shiraz is quintessentially Heathcote. With fruit sourced from Mitchelton Wines’ premium vineyard in Heathcote, the nose exhibits a complexity of savoury, earthy notes with a hint of eucalyptus. A wine of great power, the palate presents intense dark cherry, plum and cocoa, while the tannins remain fine and persistent.
⇐ Mitchelton Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Sourced from the estate vineyard in Nagambie, its intense savoury aromas are complemented by sweet leather and musk. The palate is all about concentrated red fruits that are layered over tar and black olive.
⇐ Mitchelton Single Vineyard Chardonnay
Light straw in colour with a bouquet of peach, melon and pale nuts, the grapes for this wine were sourced from the estate vineyard in Nagambie. The palate is complex, with an interplay of acid and oak in perfect balance with the fruit.
