Mitchelton Wines
Mitchelton Wines’ history stretches back to 1836, when the explorer Major Thomas Mitchell crossed the river on his journey from Sydney to Melbourne. The intended riverside town was to have been called Mitchellstown. Ross Shelmerdine engaged the help of Colin Preece to find an ideal site for growing premium grapes in Victoria, and he came across a perfect location with a great climate and water access. Ross went on to call his fledging winery Mitchelton, a derivation of the original name, with the first sod being turned in 1969 when the first vines were planted. Gerry Ryan OAM purchased Mitchelton in 2011, adding to the winery’s offering with the opening of a luxury boutique hotel and day spa in 2018.
The plans for the winery, cellar door and tower were drawn by Robin Boyd CBE, one of the country’s most renowned architects. More recently, Mitchelton continued its partnership with leading architects by engaging the practice of Hecker Guthrie to design the cellar door and 54 room hotel. Following Boyd’s death, the equally admired Australian architect Ted Ashton completed the design. The impressive result borrows from the existing architecture’s modern lines, rustic textures and sculptural forms, making it a natural fit in both the built and natural environment.

Tasting Notes
⇐ 2021 Mitchelton Estate Single Vineyard Shiraz
Perfumed florals, spice and hints of juicy cassis and cherry on the nose. Cassis and cherry follow onto the palate, with plush, juicy fruits, light and silky tannins and subtle spice on the finish. This wine can be served chilled.
⇐ 2020 Mitchelton Estate Grown Heathcote Shiraz
Complex notes of apple, pear, nectarine and lemon blossom, balanced with some minerality and a hint of oak. The palate is a seamless integration of stone fruits, lemon and lime, full bodied mouth filling richness, with hints of oak on the long finish.
⇐ NV Mitchelton Sparkling Rosé Cuvée
With a salmon hue, the bouquet displays delicate strawberries and crunchy red apple. The lively palate presents structure and restraint with subtle almond, supported by an energetic effervescence and seamless acid line. Pairs well with fresh seafood and creamy appetisers.
⇐ NV Mitchelton Blanc de Blancs Cuvée
This wine has intense and complex aromas with poise and depth of character. Bursting with white jasmine florals and grapefruit notes, coupled with toasted almonds, brioche and creamy nougat. Distinct yet classic pale straw in colour with a bright gold lustre.
