Buller Wines Vintage Wrap: Defined by Resilience
The 2026 vintage across Rutherglen and the King Valley has been one defined by challenging conditions but ultimately, one that produced exceptional quality fruits. The cool, late and windy growing season, combined with minimal rainfall and an unusually late frost in November, significantly reduced yields across both regions. As a result, harvest commenced at a delay of nearly three weeks, later than the previous year
Further delays came with substantial rainfall (approximately 250mm falling in the first two weeks of March) which slowed picking and created considerable disease pressure in the vineyard. Careful vineyard management and meticulous fruit selection became critical during this period, with the team working diligently to protect fruit quality
Despite these challenges, the vintage has delivered outstanding results. Lower yields have led to greater concentration, with fruit showing impressive intensity, balance and varietal definition. According to Chief Winemaker Dave Whyte, the season demanded precision and patience, but the quality of the parcels coming into the winery has been extremely rewarding.
Standout parcels include the King Valley Sauvignon Blanc, which is shaping up to be one of the finest wines of the vintage, showing remarkable purity and vibrancy, alongside the Rutherglen Durif, which is also looking exceptional with depth, structure, and powerful fruit expression.
While quantities will be limited, the 2026 releases are expected to be some of the most expressive and refined in recent years across both regions.
