An Anniversary for a Family Run Winery

Black Wallaby Wines marked its 20th anniversary in 2024, celebrating two decades since Jim and Sue Lawson first launched the label. Originally conceived as a retirement hobby to share their love of wine and fruit with friends and family, the venture has grown significantly.

When their son David showed interest in winemaking, Jim expanded the vineyard from 10 to 35-acres, aiming to create a lasting family legacy. Today, David, his wife Jayne, and their three daughters continue to develop the Black Wallaby brand. They celebrated the milestone in March surrounded by family and friends from their community who attend their annual ‘picking party’ each year.

David now focuses on minimal intervention winemaking, showcasing the exceptional fruit from the Bendigo region. While Jim may have technically retired from his main role within the Black Wallaby business, he spends majority of his time in the vineyard with Dave, doing what he loves most - producing beautiful fruit to create incredible wines.
