Zig Zag Road
Zig Zag Road
Nestled among the expansive vines and rolling hills of the Macedon Ranges, Zig Zag Road is a scenic vineyard and winery that is imbued with country charm. Enjoy a unique cellar door experience as you are warmly welcomed to enjoy tastings of a range of passionately handcrafted wines. The cellar door overlooks the picturesque, undulating vineyard, and the lovely state forest beyond. When visiting, one of the Churchills will meet you at the cellar door and can show you the workings of the winery if of interest. Visitors are more than welcome to bring their own food and picnic on the grounds as well.
Made on site in the traditional manner with open fermenters, including a small basket press and small oak barriques, Zig Zag Road’s range includes riesling, pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, rosé, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and sparkling shiraz.
Zig Zag Road has released a new natural wine label to sit alongside the existing range, called Kind Folk. The Kind Folk label goes some ways to acknowledge the kindness that Harriet and Henry Churchill rely upon from their friends and members of the community to help run the vineyard.
The Zig Zag Road vineyard was planted in 1972, making it the third oldest in the Macedon Ranges. With 10 acres under low-yielding vines, the grapes are hand-picked by family and friends.
⇐ Zig Zag Road Riesling
This exceptional dry-style wine shows good varietal character. It presents with a bright and clean light-straw colour, displaying great intensity with zesty lime and fruit flavours. Crisp with a steely mineral finish, this riesling will cellar well.
⇐ Zig Zag Road Sparkling Shiraz
This delightful wine has a fragrant, blackberry nose, which matches its colour. It’s a lighter, refreshing varietal made in the champagne style, and exhibits sweetness on the front palate, which is followed by a burst of spice and berry flavours. With only a hint of bubbles, the dry finish leaves a pleasant lingering taste on the palate that even the most discerning wine enthusiast will enjoy.
⇐ Zig Zag Shiraz
A lighter style typical of cool-climate varietals, this wine displays fruit, spice and peppered notes, and together with the oak on the middle palate, lingers with a dry finish.
⇐ Kind Folk Sauvignon Blanc
A wild fermented, unfiltered and cloudy sauvignon blanc, which was matured on lees with minimum sulphites. A bold and unusual wine that was crafted using finely tuned natural winemaking processes.
