Wren Estate
Wren Estate
Uniquely intimate, Wren Estate hand-tends every vine and each is diligently cultivated to guarantee the optimum growing conditions. As a result, Wren Estate produces exquisite wines that reflect the impeccable care and attention given throughout the growing process.
Standing as a testament to Wren Estate’s reputation, almost all of its wines have scored an impressive 95 points or higher by acclaimed wine critic James Halliday. Wren Estate was specifically chosen by winemaker and founder Michael Wren for its unique terroir and abundant clonal and rootstock selections which is housed by the estate. Utilising Heathcote’s renowned 550-million-year-old Cambrian soils, Wren Estate is responsible for the production of shiraz, merlot, malbec and marsanne grape varieties.
Defined by its attentive approach to viticulture, outstanding cellar door experience, and intimate, welcoming feel, Wren Estate has recently received the recognition it deserves. The winery was awarded the prestigious title of a 5-star rated winery and was also named one of the Top Ten NewWineries in the 2021 Halliday Wine Companion.
Wren Estate is an exemplary celebration of the wonders of small batch, high quality wine production. Grapes are only sourced from Wren Estate’s home block of 15-hectares and staying true to its dedicated approach, all the grapes are handpicked. To produce its delectable array of wines, Wren Estate mirrors the traditional Portuguese methods by using low, wide, open fermenters that replicate the ‘lagares’ used in Douro, Portugal to make Port wine.
Although Wren Estate’s award-winning wines are an unmissable attraction for wine lovers, its unique cellar door also defines it as a sought-after destination. Boasting seamless indoor to outdoor flow, guests can absorb the breathtaking views from indoors or relax outside in the gorgeous natural surrounds.
Also available on-site for purchase is a range of olive oil made from the property’s 2,200 olive trees. Made under Wren Estate’s meticulous care, you can rest assured that the olive oil is held to the same high standards the winery is known for. Honouring the Portuguese influence on the winery, Wren Estate also offers a selection of imported Portuguese wines, allowing its visitors a delicious taste of the Mediterranean in glorious Heathcote.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2020 ‘SYRAHPHER’ Syrah (Shiraz)
This wine was handpicked and made by wild fermentation in a beeswax lined concrete lagar. With a bright colour, this wine has notes of red fruits, sour cherry, dried herbs, rose petals. It is ideal for hot days, served slightly chilled.
⇐ 2018 Wren Estate MXW Shiraz
The most intricate wine of the year. 80 per cent whole bunch ferment and thirty-months in French oak puncheons to create this complex and concentrated wine with ripe plum, black cherry, and raspberry. Beautifully silky on the palate, super fine-grained tannins provide a wonderful length.
⇐ 2018 Wren Estate ‘The Plot Thickens’ Shiraz
With the remarkable vintage in 2018 attributed to the perfect ripening conditions, this wine shows remarkable concentration but is also beautifully balanced with significant displays of brightness and freshness in the wine. Supple tannins combine to produce a wonderfully long finish with red and dark fruits present as well as spice and dark cocoa.
⇐ 2020 Wren Estate Marsanne
Perfectly suited to the Heathcote conditions, marsanne grapes thrive, and this is reflected in this wine. A mix of pear, apple, honeysuckle and toasted almond on the nose and palate. Half the wine is aged for six months in older barrels to add texture and body to the wine. Allow this wine to appreciate with age.
