Tokar Estate

Tokar Estate is a family-owned and -operated Yarra Valley winery and restaurant, run by Leon and Rita Tokar who warmly invite you to try their fabulous range of boutique wines and new vintage releases. The winery’s welcoming atmosphere and restaurant encourage you to dine and experience magnificent Mediterranean cuisine, while enjoying the spectacular views of the Yarra Valley.

When Leon and Rita purchased the property in June 1995, the land was covered in thistles, tussock grass and snakes; the initial plan was to produce grapes purely for their own consumption – “to play at making wine ourselves, for ourselves”. The fabulous positioning of the site, however, coupled with the extremely fertile soils, made it an ideal location for a modest planting of pinot noir. With this humble beginning, Leon Tokar’s vision was born and in 1996, the vineyard was established with 12.5 hectares under vine and was producing premium fruit by 1998.

These occasions were so popular among their family friends, and so personally rewarding for both Leon and Rita, that it was not long before the concept of making wines and meals on a larger scale took off, resulting in the creation of Tokar Estate – a fabulous setting in the heart of the iconic Yarra Valley region.

Winemaker Martin Siebert joined the Tokar Estate team in 2012, bringing with him a wealth of winemaking experiences and a passion for creating high-quality wines, which has lifted the winery to new heights. Working in New Zealand and France had a big impact on Siebert’s winemaking approach and has expanded his knowledge about the importance of a good vineyard site for producing premium wines.

Tokar Estate specialises in Yarra Valley single-vineyard wines, producing a number of varieties of red and white wines including one rosé. The varieties made under the Tokar Estate label are rosé, chardonnay, pinot noir, tempranillo, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, and the flagship The Aria, with a few special releases made on the best of years.

2019 marked a change in direction with a complete new look and rebrand, along with newly designed labels. The brand consists of the white label ‘Village’ wine that is Yarra Valley-focused and the black label ‘Coldstream Vineyard’ wine which is single vineyard specific. Tokar Estate was one of the first wineries in the Yarra Valley to plant the then unknown varietal tempranillo, which has gone on to become something of an icon for the winery. The first of many unknown varietals to be planted around the region, it was around this time that the birth of the alternate varietals in the Yarra Valley began to take shape.

Tasting Notes

2018 Tokar Estate Yarra Valley Rosé
⇐ 2018 Tokar Estate Yarra Valley Rosé

The nose of this wine is enticing and more complex than the average rosé, with sweet Turkish delight and vanilla flavours balanced by savoury blackberry leaf and fresh dough. The palate has richness but is livened by a playful spritz. Flavours of red apple, pomegranate and pink grapefruit form the sweet fruited core with a long, dry and slightly briny finish.

2018 Tokar Estate Yarra Valley Chardonnay
⇐ 2018 Tokar Estate Yarra Valley Chardonnay

This is a lovely modern Australian chardonnay. Fermented with wild yeasts in large French oak barrels, this wine was bottled young and fresh. With flavours of nectarine, lime and hazelnuts, this chardonnay pairs wonderfully with summer seafood and salads.

2018 Tokar Estate Yarra Valley Shiraz
⇐ 2018 Tokar Estate Yarra Valley Shiraz

This is a great example of the new wave of shiraz coming out of the Yarra Valley. Intoxicating aromas of fresh berries and exotic spice leap from the glass, followed by a juicy palate with fine supporting tannins. This Tokar Estate shiraz won gold at the 2019 Royal Melbourne Wine Awards.

2018 Tokar Estate Pinot Noir ‘Coldstream Vineyard'
⇐ 2018 Tokar Estate Pinot Noir ‘Coldstream Vineyard’

This pinot noir is made from several small batches, all treated differently to build layers of complexity. Made with thirty percent whole bunches and thirty percent new oak, this is a wine of elegance and power, and showcases flavours of cherry, sesame, vanilla, smoke-cured meat and spice.
