Located amongst the rolling hills of Dixons Creek, Sutherland Estate is a family-owned boutique winery and vineyard with the northern-most cellar door in the Yarra Valley. The vineyard was established in 1995 – Cathy Phelan and Angus Ridley have been the winemakers since 2006.

Across the estate, 10-acres have been planted, including chardonnay, gewurztraminer, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet and tempranillo – for which the estate is renowned. The balance of the property’s 110-acres is largely undisturbed, native bushland. Stylistically, Sutherland Estate’s wines sit between the warmer valley floor and the cooler Upper Yarra.

All of Sutherland Estate’s wines are estate-grown and vinified. Depending on the year and variety, they are often unfined and unfiltered, allowing for the most authentic expression of the site’s aromas and flavours. These wines are exclusive, with only 2000 cases produced per vintage, making each delectable drop truly precious. Along with numerous awards and medals, James Halliday has given the estate a 5-red star rating.

Sutherland Estate’s cellar door is situated on the side of Daniel’s Hill at an elevation of about 200-metres, providing breathtaking views that overlook meandering vineyards and surrounding bushland beyond, including the Yarra Valley, Dandenong and Warburton Ranges.

The open, light-filled cellar door is simply stunning, with large floor-to-ceiling windows facing the north and south, bringing the views inside. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the picturesque scenery on the multi-level deck outside, or sit by the cosy open fire indoors with a glass of wine and a vineyard platter. Tastings are available at the bar, where you can experience some of Yarra Valley’s finest wines. The beautiful cellar door is the perfect setting for your wedding or private function, with a variety of menus and personalised, high-quality service on offer.

To extend your visit, stay in one of the two towers either side of the cellar door, both of which are available for a romantic couple’s retreat. Unwind over a glass of wine and the magical views and wake up to native birdsong.
