Sutherland Estate
Sutherland Estate
Nestled on the side of Daniel’s Hill, and at an elevation of approximately 200 metres, is Sutherland Estate’s beautiful cellar door. Thanks to its positioning, Sutherland Estate is blessed with one of the most spectacular vineyard sites in Australia, commanding breathtaking views of the Yarra Valley, Dandenong and Warburton ranges.
With four hectares under vine, the winery was established in 2000 by Ron Phelan, Sheila Phelan, Cathy Phelan and Angus Ridley, and specialises in gewürztraminer, tempranillo and sparkling tempranillo. Since its beginnings, Sutherland Estate has received many accolades, reflecting its high-quality wine and winemaking practices.
The cellar door itself was designed and built by Ron Phelan. It is an elegant, spacious and light-filled room bounded by enormous floor-to-ceiling windows to the north and south. The vaulted 13-metre ceiling is capped with a striking clear glass prism, which bathes the cellar door with natural light. The cellar door is framed by two picturesque towers, one of which is available as accommodation for a romantic getaway.
This beautiful cellar door is open for wine tastings and sales, and is also available for weddings and private functions. On warmer days, the award-winning wines and local cheeses may be enjoyed on the large multi-level deck, while in winter, a roaring log fire warms the heart and soul.
Tasting Notes

⇐ 2017 Sutherland Estate Chardonnay
Hand-picked at optimal ripeness, and barrel fermented in new and seasoned French oak barriques, this wine exhibits aromas of white peach, hazelnut and citrus. The complex, long palate finishes with a fresh minerality and texture.

⇐ 2016 Sutherland Estate Gerwürztraminer
This delicious wine displays an aromatic riot of lychees, gooseberry, orange blossom and spice. The palate is crisp with citrus and lingering nashi pear. Spicy and dry, it brilliantly partners seafood and many Asian dishes.

⇐ 2017 Sutherland Estate Pinot Noir
Irresistibly perfumed with rose petals and red fruits, this pinot noir’s palate is silky with red cherries, red currants and spice, together with a little earth and sappiness. Displaying fine, soft tannins, this wine is unfined and unfiltered.

⇐ 2018 Sutherland Estate Sparkling Tempranillo
Aromas of dark cherries, licorice and chocolate, with spice and earthy undertones, the sparkling tempranillo spends 12 months in seasoned barriques before undergoing secondary fermentation in the bottle. Inky purple in colour, the palate is medium-bodied and well structured, with fine tannins and a persistent bead.
