Shaws Road Winery
Shaws Road Winery
Situated high within the hills overlooking the Strathewen valley, Shaws Road Winery was founded thirty-five years ago by George Apted Senior and continues to thrive within the Nillumbik region of the elegant Yarra Valley. With 17- acres under vine, this family-run winery produces up to ten wine varieties each year, with a primary focus on the delectable cool-climate varieties that thrive within the region, such as chardonnay, pinot noir and a variety of sparkling wines.
The family-run winery manages four vineyards in total, and the fruit sprawled throughout the valley is hand-picked and brought back to the Shaws Road Winery where it is expertly processed, fermented and stored. George Apted Senior remains one of the winery’s premium winemakers, alongside John Graves and Karl Helper with assistance from George Apted Junior.
The Shaws Road Winery cellar door is a dream attraction for any wine lover and demonstrates a true embrace of the Yarra Valley wine region. Perched at the top of the winery’s Arthurs Creek vineyard, the cellar door enjoys 360-degree panoramic views of vineyards, rolling hills and farmlands with the Kinglake ranges in the distance.
The building also boasts a decadent restaurant that seats up to seventy – or stands 120 if you prefer a canape event. This elegant venue is the perfect location for events or a leisurely weekend meal and offers a mouth-watering menu that highlights local produce from the Yarra Valley, perfect to pair with the wine that is produced merely a stone’s throw away.
Not simply a destination for the wine connoisseurs, Shaws Road Winery’s on-site retail shop boasts produce and products to tempt you even further – everything from jams, chocolates and truffles to cushions, pottery and artwork – ensuring you have all the perfect morsels and accompaniments for you to enjoy or gift on, and share in the true Shaws Road Winery experience.
Surrounded by magnificent native gardens, the cellar door is complete with outdoor seating to provide an idyllic spot to while away the warm summer days. Simply sit back with a cool or enriching glass of wine made by one of Shaws Road Winery’s experienced winemakers and appreciate the stunning valley vistas.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2020 Premium Chardonnay
Reflecting the rich elegance of the French style of wine, this premium chardonnay offers hints of vanilla and stone fruits. Fermented in French oak barrels for twelve months, the wine gains the lovely creamy, fruity style that creates complex layers to the flavour palate. The perfect accompaniment to chicken, veal and summer salads.
⇐ 2018 Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay (Blush)
Picked early when slightly under-ripe, the fruit for this wine is blended at Shaws Road Winery, bottled off-site and stored on lees for five years. With fresh, vibrant flavours, this wine is a celebratory drink that is perfect to pair with duck, fish, soft cheeses and a barbeque.
⇐ 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc, Merlot
Rich in colour and flavour, this luscious wine is proudly one of the winemaker’s favourite varieties. A beautiful blend of three grape varietals is used to achieve a balanced Bordeaux-style wine that delivers a full bodied and powerful flavour experience. Pair with braised lamb with fennel, crispy pork, or your favourite pasta dish.
⇐ 2019 Shiraz
Deep ruby in colour, this rich shiraz boasts a powerful palate of dark berries, ripe tannins, black pepper and spices. Maturing in oak barrels for two years gives this wine its characteristic balance of fruit and oak flavours. Cellared in bottles for twelve months, this wine holds its own against flavourful dishes, and is one of the winery’s most popular wines.
