Nicholson River Winery
Nicholson River Winery
Just three kilometres from the Prince’s Highway sits Nicholson River Winery, the oldest established vineyard between Sydney and Melbourne. Since 1978, the winery has produced European-styled Australian wines that reflect the intense flavours unique to the area. Food friendly, low preservative and estate grown and made wines are the features of Nicholson River Winery. The rich flavours from a mild maritime climate makes the wines distinctive. The variety of wines are sure to please. Ken and Juliet Eckersley first planted the vines in 1978, deciding to plant in Gippsland Lakes due to the similarities to South-West France. The craft of making wine and love of drinking it gave them the challenge to develop the vineyard in a new area.
The winery has been voted eight times the most popular Victorian white wine, along with international awards for its chardonnay and syrah. About ten wines are produced each year with eight hectares under-vine. The wines are more full-flavoured than full-bodied, and more elegant than hard, when compared to mainstream Australian wines. Nicholson River wines are crafted with minimal intervention to ensure their character is maintained. Nicholson River winery also sells local cheese and jams, showcasing and supporting Gippsland’s incredible produce and flavours. Take in the excellent views of the Nicholson River Valley, making a picturesque moment and the perfect place to indulge in quality wine and delicious food pairings. Ken and Juliet provide warm hospitality, making it a must visit in the Gippsland region.
