Mount Avoca

As the second oldest winery in the region, Mount Avoca was pivotal in transforming the beautiful Pyrenees region into the renowned centre of wine known today. First established in 1970 by John and Arda Berry, Mount Avoca is the second oldest vineyard in the region and since its inception, the winery has strived to improve its viticulture with every passing year.

The results of this careful cultivation can be observed today; Mount Avoca is the only Australian Certified Organic winery in the region and its stewardship of the local environment and ecosystem is at the heart of its philosophy. With an innate understanding of the land’s intricate ecology, Mount Avoca likes to think that the wines reflect the team’s honest commitment to tend and care for the earth.

Its status as an organic winery cements its commitment to quality at every step of the journey. Mount Avoca believes that respecting the land and environment align with making the best wines in the world, so the talented team wholly embrace nature in all its practices. Its cool climate and unique terroir are perfectly suited for the nine wines produced on the estate and can be attributed to the winery’s immense success.

These practices have not gone unnoticed as Mount Avoca boasts an impressive reputation as the most highly-awarded organic winery and its ever-growing collection of awards and accolades have been awarded to not only the winery itself, but also for its wines and accommodation; allowing Mount Avoca to stand strong as one of the most highly awarded wineries amongst both organic and non-organic wineries alike.

Mount Avoca bears the prestigious status of a 5-star rated winery in the 2021 Halliday Wine Companion, its cellar door won the 2021 Gourmet Traveller award for Best Cellar Door and it boasts 4-star rated accommodation in the form of three luxurious eco lodges. Most recently, its wines were awarded both Best Alternative Variety in Australia and New Zealand and Best Shiraz in Australia and New Zealand for the 2018 Estate Lagrein and 2019 Estate Shiraz respectively in 2020.

For those seeking to truly experience the remarkable Mount Avoca, extend your visit by staying in one of three luxurious eco-lodges, and observe unblemished starry night skies. In the morning, witness the majestic countryside up close by biking through the rolling hills, or enjoying a family picnic at the vineyard’s on-site barbecue facilities.

Tasting Notes

2019 Estate Shiraz
⇐ 2019 Estate Shiraz

Displaying aromas and full-bodied flavours of peppery blackberry and ripe, dark cherry, the wine is supported by a web of soft, silky tannins. A clean, moderate finish of toasty cedar and soft cloves ensure a delightful accompaniment to pork and indulgent, buttery mashed potatoes.

2018 Estate Lagrein
⇐ 2018 Estate Lagrein

A testament to the wine’s irresistibility, the vines must be netted to prevent the local cockatoo population from indulging in the lagrein grapes. Deep ruby red with a purple rim, the wine displays neat, medium-bodied flavours of blueberry jam, cherry and soft toast that are interwoven with moderate tannins, alleviated by sweet strawberry and herbaceous notes.

2020 Estate Sauvignon Blanc
⇐ 2020 Estate Sauvignon Blanc

Clean, bright, and vibrant, this wine displays medium-bodied flavours of gooseberry and crushed nettle elevated by hints of freshly cut grass and lemon rind, accentuated by aromas of gooseberry, grapefruit, white peach, and lemongrass. Its distinctive long-lingering flavour profile allows it to be best enjoyed with Asian foods – a delightful deviation from typical sauvignon blancs.

2017 The Calling Shiraz
⇐ 2017 The Calling Shiraz

Dark and rich in colour, flavour, and aroma alike, this elegant and complex wine is brimming with full-bodied flavours. On the nose, fragrant ripe boysenberries and tart raspberries are embraced by warm vanilla and on the palate, flavours of raspberry fondant and damson plum are supported by brittle cocoa powdered tannins finished with zesty pepper and sweet oak.
