A visit to Mount Avoca will take you to the very origins of the beautiful Pyrenees wine region. After the first vineyards were planted in the 1880s, the Pyrenees ranges were transformed into one of the most exceptional winemaking regions in the country. Mount Avoca was first established in 1970 by John and Arda Barry, which makes it the second oldest vineyard in the entire region.
The Barrys made it their mission to find the ultimate wine region to create their own vineyard. After many years of travelling across both Victorian and South Australian soil, Mount Avoca was born at the foothills of the beautiful Pyrenees ranges. The winery is now owned and managed by their son and executive winemaker, Matthew Barry. He leads the passionate team to ensure the Barrys’ ideals and expectations of quality and purity are present in every single bottle.
Mount Avoca prides itself on its compliance with national production standards, and since 2013, the vineyard has been producing organic grapes that are recognised by Australian certified organic. As of 2016, every aspect of the entire winery has also become fully organic.
The combination of old-fashioned values and modern technology is just one of the secrets behind Mount Avoca’s success. Specialising in handcrafted organic wines that will tantalise your tastebuds, the vineyard is best known for its cool-climate shiraz and sauvignon blanc, but has recently turned its focus to Italian and Spanish varietals, including lagrein and tempranillo. visitors will love Mount Avoca’s panoramic cellar door, which boasts magnificent views of the vineyard. ⇐ 2017 Old Vine Shiraz
This certified organic shiraz is from the winery’s oldest vines, which were planted in 1971. Dark garnet in colour, the wine has a nose of clean aromas with blackberry, prune, toasty coffee grinds, and vapours of vanilla mocha. The full-bodied palate is filled with ﬂavours of dark plum, herbaceous cherry and fig conserve, as well as soft-rolling tannins, with a lingering and satisfying finish of cocoa and black pepper.
⇐ Jack Barry Sparkling Shiraz
With a sweet, ripe, velvety richness, this sparkling shiraz has a long and luxurious finish. A deep, dark garnet red, with aromas notes of blackberry, blood plum and cassis aromas, as well as chocolate, mint, berries and star anise overlay, the wine has a creamy mid palate mousse. Balanced, fine tannins add structured length and persistence to the finish.
⇐ 2018 Estate Sauvignon Blanc
This certified organic cool-climate sauvignon blanc is a bright, pale-straw colour, with primary aromas of gooseberry and zesty mandarin, as well as a background of white peach and lemon grass. The medium-bodied palate has ﬂavours of gooseberry, lemon rind, kumquat, and a lingering finish of fresh-cut grass and Bramley apple.
⇐ 2017 Estate Merlot
Ruby red and purple in colour, this certified organic merlot has intense ﬂavours of ripe plums and fresh blackberry, as well as cherry toast, coffee bean, and supple tannins integrated from the refined French oak. The wine has aromas of damson and bramble fruits, with nuances
of warm, dark cacao, and its finish is poised and seamless in length.
