Mount Avoca

The second oldest winery in the region, Mount Avoca was pivotal in transforming the historic Pyrenees region into the high-quality centre of winemaking we see today. First established\ in 1970 by John and Arda Barry, the winery has continually improved its viticulture each season with a longstanding focus on sustainability and environment. The results of this hard work and dedication can be observed today; Mount Avoca is the only fully Australian Certified Organic certified vineyard and winery in the region and its stewardship of the local environment and ecosystem is at the heart of its philosophy.

Fifty-five years of working on the land has led to an innate understanding of the land’s intricate ecology and the team’s honest commitment to tend and care for the earth is clearly reflected in the wine’s quality. Mount Avoca recognises that connection to the land and environment align with making the best wines in the world, so all decisions are based on the best way to embrace nature across all facets of production. Combined with the high altitude, the cool climate and unique terroir are perfectly suited to the wines produced on the estate and contribute to the winery’s immense success.

These practices have not gone unnoticed as Mount Avoca boasts an impressive reputation as the most highly awarded organic winery in the country. Its ever-growing collection of trophies and accolades are not only for winemaking, but also for its accommodation, sustainability and customer service. Mount Avoca’s cellar door won the 2021 Gourmet Traveller award for Best Cellar Door and it boasts 4-star rated accommodation in the form of three luxurious eco lodges.

The recently created 100-acre Conservation Zone continues the commitment Mount Avoca has to sustainability and education. Enjoy walking or mountain biking through an area that teems with wildlife. Dozens of kangaroos call this home along with families of black wallabies, echidnas, stumpy-tail lizards and native birds including many endangered species. Capture amazing views from the lookout across the plains and hills of western Victoria along with an old mining hut and remnant gold-diggings.

For those seeking to truly experience the remarkable Mount Avoca, extend your visit by staying in one of three luxurious eco-lodges, and observe unblemished starry night skies and the serene sounds of nature. In the morning, witness the majestic countryside up close by biking through the rolling hills, or enjoying a family picnic at the vineyard’s on-site barbecue facilities.

Tasting Notes

Sauvignon Blanc
⇐ 2024 Estate Sauvignon Blanc

Pale straw in colour, pineapple and passionfruit aromas combine with pear and verbena to introduce lemon sorbet and orange rind flavours intermingling with ripe melon and pineapple. Lovely texture leading to a subtle yet bright flinty finish makes this an ideal wine to pair with pan fried-scallops, tempura, oysters au naturel or lemon chicken with a rocket, nasturtium flower & sorrel salad.

Jack Barry
⇐ Jack Barry Sparkling Shiraz

This iconic “méthode traditionelle” has a cult following – and for good reason! Aged in old French and Hungarian oak hogsheads for up to forty months, it is then bottle-fermented and aged on lees for another eighteen months. Made every two or three years, those extra years in bottle create a complex and creamy wine with plenty of flavour and richness while retaining the hallmark elegance of Mount Avoca’s reds.

Late Harvest Viogner
⇐ 2024 Late Harvest Viognier

This delightful wine entices with fresh apricot and quince paste aromas weaving across Turkish Delight and sweet peach. Sublimely balanced with a long line of crisp acidity that gives the wine its impeccably clean lemon sherbet finish. Drink as an aperitif – it is a perfect match for tangy blue and mature cheeses, soft cheeses or your favourite dessert.

The Calling
⇐ 2019 The Calling Shiraz

2019 The Calling Shiraz Consistently rated 95 and 96 points, this reserve shiraz is a testament to Mount Avoca founders, John and Arda Barry. Over fifty years later, enjoy this liquid connection of land, fruit and wine. Rich, plush and elegant, the long firm powdery tannins cradle layers of dark fruits, toasty vanilla and hints of soft black pepper and spice.
