Morris of Rutherglen
Morris of Rutherglen
With more than 150 years of history and winemaking tradition, the Morris family of Rutherglen has earned the esteemed position as one of the most prominent winemaking families in Australia. Behind the corrugated tin walls of the historic winery lies some of the world’s greatest wines. Under the guidance of current winemaker David Morris, the Morris of Rutherglen range of fortified, table and sparkling wines continue to be made with the same love, passion and traditional winemaking techniques that has been the hallmark of Morris of Rutherglen since 1859.
Rutherglen is regarded as the home of fortified wine in Australia. The region has produced muscats and topaque (formerly tokay) that have commanded world attention since the 1850s. With a strong continental climate of hot summer days and cool nights, Rutherglen conditions are favourable for the exceptionally high sugar levels need for fortified wines. These wines are grown on a band of loam on the lower slopes of the gentle local hills, snaking its way around the centre of the town.
Constructed in 1972 and located within the heart of the winery is the atrium style cellar door designed by legendary Australian architect, Robin Boyd. Offering views of century old wine barrels and white stone scree floors, the cellar door offers up a close experience to the making of Morris of Rutherglen’s world-renowned wines.
