Morris of Rutherglen

With over 165 years and six generations of dedication, the Morris family combines decades of tradition with contemporary techniques. Rutherglen is the unparalleled home of Australian fortifiedwine and is steeped in history of the late Victorian era. The unique microclimate of hot summer days and cool nights is perfect for ageing and helps to create the distinct flavours that have become the hallmark of Morris. The winery specialises in fortified, table and sparkling wines – continuing to be made with the same love, passion and traditional winemaking techniques that has been the hallmark of Morris since 1859.

Morris wines are one of Australia’s most iconic and respected wine family dynasties. The winery has earned an esteemed reputation as one of the most prominent wine-making families in Australia. In 1859, George Francis Morris established a vineyard and winery near Rutherglen in north-eastern Victoria. George’s legacy has now been passed down to sixth-generation winemaker, Madden Morris, continuing a tradition of producing both wines and whiskies in conjunction with head distiller, Darren Peck.

The winery has been awarded multiple times for both its wine and whisky. To mention one of many, the 2024 International Wine & Spirit Competition awarded gold to the winery’s Old Premium Rare Muscat. The muscat is rich and viscous with a mesmerising palate density and pairs perfectly with rich desserts and strong cheese platters. Tyson Seltzer – multi-award-winning wine writer – recalls ‘visit[ing] the Rutherglen wine show, where old Mr Morris got up to receive trophies so many times that he moved his seat to the front of the auditorium.’

Morris Whisky is also made at the cellar door and is fast becoming renowned within Australia and the whisky world. Morris Whisky reflects its regional Victorian provenance. It is made with 100% Australian premium malted barley, matured in Barossa and Coonawarra wine barrels which are prepared by hand at the family cooperage, and is finished in carefully selected barrels that have held Morris’ award-winning fortified wines.
