Marnong Estate
Marnong Estate
Marnong Estate is a unique offering, boasting sweeping views of the Macedon Ranges and remnants of the area’s history, including the original chook shed and sheep shearing sheds. Alpacas, camels, donkeys, sheep and cows roam the property – you might see them while you are enjoying a glass of wine at Café Vista, or while dining in the Good Food Guide’s one-hatted La Vètta.
The winery is located only thirty-five minutes from Melbourne CBD and fifteen minutes from Melbourne Airport. Over summer, the terrace located next to the cellar door is the perfect location to enjoy a premium wine tasting with cheese and charcuterie boards while admiring the vineyard views in the distance. The estate specialises in cool-climate pinot noir, chardonnay, shiraz and sangiovese, alongside a range of Italian varieties.
Currently, the winery produces sixteen wines per year, with more wines being added to the portfolio as the team’s new vineyard plantings mature. The new ten-hectare vineyard is a welcome addition to the already sprawling sixteen-and-a-half hectare vines that Marnong Estate currently holds. The award-winning winery has taken home one hundred and twenty-three medals, trophies and awards across its range in the last three years – a testament to its incredible winemaking expertise.
The first inhabitants of the area now known as Marnong Estate were the Woiworung people. The Woiworung people lived off the surrounding area where kangaroos and emus roamed. The rolling hills were rich with murnong, or yam daisies, a grasslands plant with edible roots, which made up their staple diet. This is partly where the name of Marnong Estate came from and is the reason for the yam daisy flower on the Marnong Estate wine labels.
When settlers arrived, the area became pastoral land for sheep farming, and ownership was passed through a few hands until Arthur Angliss took on ownership of the land in 1898. The land continued to be farmed and owned by the Angliss family until 1995. The original homestead is still on the property and has been carefully restored as an accommodation offering on the estate.
Enjoy a glass of Marnong Estate wine as you take in the breathtaking views and indulge in some delicious food. Cucina 3064 is a relaxed trattoria, offering woodfired pizza and handmade pasta. La Vètta is Marnong Estate’s signature Italian restaurant, offering a refined dining experience. There is truly something for everyone.
