Mandala Wines is the realisation of a dream for the Smedley family, who always wanted a place to grow grapes, make wine, and share the lifestyle and dream with friends and family. The Smedley’s favourite wines led them to the Yarra Valley, where they established the first of two vineyards in Yarra Junction – an area chosen for its high altitude and soils – offering great character to the exclusive pinot noir vines planted in 1999. Seven fruitful years later, they expanded Mandala Wines and established the Dixon’s Creek vineyard, with over eighty acres under vine.
Led by owner Charles Smedley, Mandala Wines produces both an estate and single-site reserve range of wines. Made only when vintage conditions are in perfect harmony, the single site selections represent a strong single region, single vineyard winemaking philosophy.
Producing more than fifteen different wines and specialising in chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon, Mandala Wines enjoys a mix of varieties across its two locations.
The main site and cellar door at Dixon’s Creek offers a full range of prized estate and single-site wines for tasting. All Mandala wines are 100 percent estate grown and hand-harvested, allowing for classic cool-climate wine production that typifies the Yarra Valley region.
The onsite contemporary glasshouse plays host to Divino Ristorante; boasting an Italian-influenced menu and pizzeria, along with panoramic views of the Mandala estate for visitors to soak up and enjoy. Available for a range of functions, the site is a popular destination scenic weddings, birthday celebrations and corporate events.
⇐ 2018 Mandala ‘The Compass’ Chardonnay
This powerful yet poised palate showcases a dynamic range of fruit character. Lime, red grapefruit, nectarine, nashi pear and cantaloupe intermingle with hints of crème anglaise, praline and subtle cured meat characters. The finish is textural and persistent, while saline and citrus flavours linger.
⇐ 2019 Mandala Yarra Valley Chardonnay
Rich aromas of pear, melon and mandarin come together with toasty notes of brioche, subtle white flower and flinty oyster shell characters. A generous and moreish texture with a focussed underlying citrus acidity lingers, though the wine remains balanced and poised.
⇐ 2019 Mandala Yarra Valley Pinot Noir
Vivid aromas of cherry and violet give way to subtle hints of orange rind and cinnamon. Bursting with red fruit flavours, the palate has a fine and subtle texture with natural acidity, adding line and poise. The finish is long with earthy tones and subtle spice.
⇐ 2016 Mandala ‘The Butterfly’ Cabernet Sauvignon
Handpicked from the west-facing slopes of the gently undulating cabernet sauvignon plantings, this wine deserves to be cellared. Lashings of cassis, blueberry and mint with rich earthy tones and loaded with fine grain tannins make this wine one that will reward you greatly with time.
