Hanging Rock Winery

Hanging Rock Winery

Hanging Rock Winery was established in 1983 and is located in Victoria’s coolest grapegrowing region, the Macedon Ranges, just an easy one hour drive from Melbourne. In 1982, with a wealth of knowledge behind them, John and Ann Ellis decided to purchase a block of land to fulfil their dream of building their own winery and making Australia’s best sparkling wine. The block they chose, known as ‘Jim Jim’, was perfect. Many in the know would say that they have achieved their dream with the Hanging Rock Winery Macedon Brut Cuvée LD.

Although the pair decided to build in the Macedon Ranges, they have always had a love and affiliation with Heathcote as a shiraz-growing region and in 1992, they planted the ‘Athol’s Paddock’ vineyard to produce the highly acclaimed Heathcote shiraz. While their roots and passion still lie in the Macedon Ranges and Heathcote, they have since expanded and now produce more than twenty-five wines covering most styles and varieties.

Hanging Rock Winery specialises in sparkling pinot noir/chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and shiraz. It also produces riesling, chardonnay and pinot gris in the whites, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernets in the reds. Tasting plates and cheese platters from local producers are available for purchase for guests wishing to enhance their wine-tasting experience.

Today, Hanging Rock Winery is one of the largest wineries in the Macedon Ranges, and it is still owned and run by the Ellis family, including John and Ann’s daughter Ruth and son Robert. It boasts an extensive range of wines, which showcase some of the best regions in Victoria. As well as this, the Ellis family launched Hanging Rock Beef in 2014. The company offers specialised beef, cured beef products and beef hide through the cellar door.

In 2018, the Ellis family launched the Art in the Vines sculpture exhibition, presenting over twenty five international and local artists’ work from October through to April each year. The iconic setting of the Macedon Ranges creates a majestic backdrop to this extraordinary exhibition that has established itself as a permanent fixture on the Australian art calendar.

Passion and expertise has resulted in an exciting and extensive range of wines that will bring you as much joy as it does to the makers.

Tasting Notes

NV Hanging Rock Winery Macedon Brut Cuvée
⇐ Hanging Rock Winery Macedon Brut Cuvée

This Macedon sparkling wine has been written up as Australia’s best by multiple wine writers in the country. It is made in a very full style thanks to its age. This wine spends four years on yeast lees in the barrel, and another four in the bottle before being disgorged.

2017 Hanging Rock Winery Jim Jim Sauvignon Blanc
⇐ Hanging Rock Winery Jim Jim Pino Noir

The grapes for this wine grow on Hanging Rock Winery’s estate, the ‘Jim Jim’. As one of the coolest vineyards in Australia, the wines produced at ‘Jim Jim’ are delicate and crisp. The winery also barrel-ferments around ten per cent of the wine, which adds depth to the palate.

2016 Hanging Rock Winery Heathcote Shiraz
⇐ Hanging Rock Winery Heathcote Shiraz Reserve

Before establishing Hanging Rock Winery, the Ellis family regularly drove through the Heathcote wine region. They fell in love with the its potential to grow great shiraz and planted a vineyard. Since then, this shiraz has won four trophies and more than sixty-four gold medals across thirtyfive vintages.

2017 Hanging Rock Winery Cambrian Rise Heathcote Shiraz
⇐ Hanging Rock Winery Jim Jim Chardonnay

The grapes for this wine grow on Hanging Rock Winery’s estate, the ‘Jim Jim’, one of the coolest vineyards in Australia.
