Granite Hills
Granite Hills
Established in 1970 by fourth generation grazier Gordon Knight and Heather Knight, Granite Hills is one Australia’s highest and most picturesque vineyards – perched atop the spectacular boulder-strewn hills of the Great Dividing Range at an altitude of 550 metres, the vista gives you an immediate impression of something quite special.
A devotee of estate grown, made and bottle wines, Granite Hills is one of the regions most acclaimed and treasured wineries. Home to an exciting range of wines including sparkling, riesling, pinot blanc, gruner veltliner, chardonnay, gamay noir, pinot noir, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. For over fifty vintages, these wines have graced the tables of generations, and its iconic label has amassed more than 500 awards at Australian and international wine shows since its first vintage in 1974.
A testament to the vineyard’s unique and brilliant wines, Granite Hills proudly boasts a five -red star rating from the Halliday Wine Companion and was heralded as an “enduring classic” by the acclaimed wine critic.
Over the last two decades, Llew and Andrea Knight, along with a small, dedicated team, have continued the passion to craft the finest quality wines from the ground up. Maintaining soil and vine health along with moderating yields are central to the objectives at Granite Hills to grow the best quality grapes in the most sustainable manner. The simple philosophy in winemaking is to produce a range of wines which show a quality which respects the terrior, shows clear varietal definition and the ability to cellar gracefully.
For the wine lover, Granite Hills offer an exclusive membership to its wine club, with seasonal specials on a range of its wines and a delivery service on carton orders.
A must-visit if you are in the Macedon Ranges region, offering a range of wines for tasting at the cellar door. Bring your own picnic, enjoy a glass of wine whilst taking in the amazing view across central Victoria. And the winery is dog friendly too.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2019 Granite Hills Shiraz
For those who have a penchant for peppery shiraz, or anyone with an adventurous palate, this vintage of Granite Hills is not to be missed. Big peppery aromas, dark-berry fruits and fragrant French oak all converge to a beautifully balanced, long-flavoured wine. A cracker of a vintage, this wine is best enjoyed aged up to fifteen years.
⇐ 2023 Granite Hills Gruner Veltliner
Relatively new to Australia, this intriguing varietal was selected and planted at the family vineyard due to its viticultural link with riesling and renowned success in the cool-granite soils of homeland Austria. A perfect pairing with food, enjoy this wine’s hearty aromatics of stone fruit, lovely rounded palate and fresh, spicy finish.
⇐ 2022 Granite Hills Gamy Noir
Although relatively small quantities are grown in Australia, gamay is developing much interest. Renowned for its success when grown in the cool and elevated granite soils in central France, this varietal is very well suited to the site. Enjoy this wine chilled, and embrace its lovely fragrant fruit, vibrancy of character and freshness.
⇐ 2024 Granite Hills Riesling
Granite Hills’ ancient granite soils, high altitude and cool evening temperatures provide its nearing fiftyyear-old vines with a natural balance and rare purity of fruit. With more than forty-five vintages, the winery’s riesling has been awarded thirtyseven trophies, including The Victorian Trophy for White Wines of Provenance at the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards in 2014 and again in 2017, bolstering this cool-climate Australian riesling as one of the region’s best.
