Grampians Estate

Grampians Estate

Grampians Estate has quickly become one of the region’s leading boutique wineries and has accumulated a long list of awards since 2002, including a 5-red star rating from James Halliday and an impressive sixty-plus trophies.

The St Ethels Vineyard at Great Western features shiraz and riesling vines planted in the late 1800s, with the riesling vines thought to be the oldest in Victoria. This vineyard was established by the Salinger family in 1878, and many of the original shiraz vines are still in production. Grampians Estate’s Mafeking Vineyard is located south of the Great Dividing Range, alongside the Grampians National Park. This vineyard, which was planted by Tom Guthrie in 1989, has produced many award-winning wines. The two flagship wines at Grampians Estate are the Streeton Reserve Shiraz and the Rutherford Sparkling Shiraz. These two wines reflect the region’s fine reputation for elegant, cool-climate spicy shiraz.

In 2018, Grampians Estate was named Champion Small Winery at the Australian Small Winemakers Show for the second year running, while its 2017 St Ethel’s Shiraz won the Premiers Trophy at the 2019 Victorian Wine Show.

The wide range of wines available at the cellar door includes a variety of shiraz, grenache, tempranillo, pinot, riesling, chardonnay, fortified wines, and sparkling white and rosé. The renovated cellar door offers a light lunch menu which has a variety of food options such as cheese platters, quiches, and espresso coffee. Local produce, books and glassware are also available for purchase.

The staff and cellar door owners offer visitors a friendly, informative and enjoyable experience. In 2019, Gourmet Traveller WINE awarded Grampians Estate as Cellar Door with Best Food for the Grampians region. The completion of a major redevelopment at the cellar door in 2020 has doubled the visitor space, allowing additional food options. A deck opening out onto the 1878 vines is spectacular a feature for all.

Tasting Notes

2016 Streeton Reserve Shiraz
2018 Streeton Reserve Shiraz

Spicy, with a powerful yet elegant palate, and perfumed integrated oak. Dark plums, blackberries, excellent length and balance with an enjoyable lingering finish. Beautiful oak and fruit interaction. This wine boasts two trophies and four gold medals.

2017 Rutherford Sparkling Shiraz
⇐ 2019 Rutherford Sparkling Shiraz

This elegant and fulfilling wine consumes the mouth with fruit and effervescence. The palate is spicy and rich with fruity flavours and some varietal spice on the nose. Made as per method-traditionelle, this shiraz has beautiful balance, length and style.

2017 Mafeking Shiraz
⇐ 2021 Mafeking Shiraz

Intense aromas reminiscent of black licorice, olives and cola, with a big, soft and seductive palate, rich with spicy berry flavours with lashings of licorice and grippy tannins. A crowd favourite.

2017 Grampians GST (Grenache Shiraz Tempranillo)
⇐ 2021 Woolclasser’s GST

This highly engaging wine is made up of fifty per cent grenache, forty per cent shiraz and ten per cent tempranillo. Vibrant violet and rose petal aromas lead to a multi-layered flavoursome wine based around the grenache. The shiraz adds depth and the tempranillo some complexity in a wine where the palate is rich, flavoursome, fresh, long and fine.
