A proudly family run business, Fowles Wine owns and manages 300 acres of vines across two vineyards in the Strathbogie Ranges. Located 100 kilometres north of Melbourne, the rugged region is characterised by ancient granite boulders dating back over 360 million years. A huge peninsula pushed up from the ocean, the Strathbogie Ranges has emerged as a truly distinct, high-altitude and cool climate region, producing intense wines that are elegant and full of character.
The topography is undulating, allowing for a range of microclimates and sun conditions across the vineyards. This brings a great deal of diversity to the fruit – permitting a spectrum of ripeness and flavour profiles that craft interesting blends. Out of thirteen different varieties grown, Fowles Wine’s most awarded are Riesling and Shiraz – the style and character of Fowles Wine reflects the cool climate, with the whites exhibiting great fruit intensity and minerality with a lightness and freshness, and the reds highly perfumed, intensely coloured and powerful, yet restrained.
The Fowles are a farming family, with a rich generational history of farming the land, 4500 acres of private farmland produce food for their farm-to-table restaurant. Here also sits the beautiful, historic building known as Killeen Stables, set amidst a working sheep station and rolling vineyards.
The farm-to-table dining experience showcases sustainable and authentic food brought to life in the restaurant and prepared with love. Inspired by Matt Fowles’ love of real food – wild or home-grown meat and vegetables from the Strathbogie Ranges – bountiful ingredients from the property at Fowles Wine and sourced from regional producers are used for simple but beautiful dishes for guests to savour on site.
Every dish on the restaurant menu has been created to perfectly match a Fowles Wine for you to enjoy as you gaze out at the natural beauty of the granite mountains and amazing native gardens surrounding the restaurant and cellar door. Fowles Wine is the world’s first winery to blend wine to specifically complement the intensity of wild game with the Ladies who Shoot their Lunch and Are you Game? ranges. Inspired by the family’s own free-range lamb the winemakers have produced a range of wine called Farm to Table, crafted specifically to match the more ‘open’ fibre and ‘softer’ texture of farm raised meat. This ethos guides the family throughout all their businesses – if it can’t be caught or grown themselves, then it will be sourced from regional food producing friend’s gardens and paddocks.
