Flying Brick Cider Co.
Flying Brick Cider Co.
Officially opening its doors in December 2014, this retro-inspired landmark venue is calling out to visitors to the Bellarine region. Think innovate space, a tasting paddle of ciders, amazing food without the ‘fancy’, some of the best Bellarine wines around, a solid selection of beer, live music Friday nights and Saturday afternoons and you’ll get an inkling of what to expect – fabulous, funky, fun.
Flying Brick Cider Co was launched on the Bellarine Peninsula in 2010. The quirky name comes from the yellow tailed black cockatoo whose local nickname is ‘Flying Brick’. Known for their spunk, these birds are loved for their happy, playful and seemingly ‘naughty’ appearance and disposition. Local legend also states that if a flock of black cockatoos flies overhead, you are blessed with good luck.
Flying Brick ciders are traditionally crafted from 100 percent fresh fruit and – unlike many mainstream Australian ciders which are nothing more than synthetic carbonated water – contain no sugars, colours, flavourings or concentrates.
Today, Flying Brick is known and loved as one of the founders of true Australian craft cider and has distribution moving across Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
The building design is true to brand, reflecting the flying brick bird itself with the exterior façade echoing its namesake’s colours and wing span. Inside, the imposing wood clad ceiling mirrors a commanding yet highly intricate wing structure.
Head chef Dylan Keegan has crafted a contemporary and distinctively different menu designed to inspire, share and indulge. Local produce and community group partnership are both key features.
In addition to the three classic and highly awarded Flying Brick Cider offerings – Original, Pear and Draught – the onsite cidery is continually crafting boutique seasonal batches from fresh, seasonal fruit under cider master Nyall Condon’s direction. Recent additions to the Flying Brick range include Pachinga and RasPerry in cool 375mL cans. The Pachinga boasts chilli, lime and ginger in a succulent pear cider base, while the RasPerry range features Packham pears infused with plenty of raspberry sweetness.
⇐ Flying Brick Cider Co. Original Cider
Pure, clean and fresh, this is an easy choice for a delightful and satisfying beverage on a hot day. It is an opulent golden-straw colour with a fine, delicate bead and lovely vanilla notes shine through on the nose. It also displays a playful creaming soda-like complexity upon the palate and loads of fresh apple sweetness.
⇐ Flying Brick Cider Co. Pear Cider
Light, crisp and delicate, this pure, uncomplicated cider is an enjoyable drink for any occasion. With a delicate pale-straw appearance, subtle and succulent pear notes across both the nose and palate unashamedly denote this cider’s origins. A lovely, dry cider, it shows vibrant, natural acidity alongside luxurious fruit on the palate.
⇐ Flying Brick Cider Co. Draught Cider
Rich, big and generous, this daring cider sees bold red apple varieties leaping out of the glass, with a warm honey and toasty display. A perfect balance of fruit, acid, tannins and alcohol ensures this cider pours with a perfect ‘moussey’ head every time and has a great mouthfeel and finish.
