Delatite Winery
Delatite Winery
The essence of family and community spirit emanates throughout Delatite Winery, extending right back to its rich heritage. Vivienne and Robert Ritchie planted the first vines in 1968 and in 1982 Vivienne took on the marketing and selling, Robert and their son David worked the vineyard and they employed their daughter Ros as the winemaker. Now, the beautiful rural winery has been run by David since 2005.
The family-owned winery has been growing grapes using biodynamic principles since 2005. In 2011, Delatite Winery started to make its wines more naturally and now the vineyard creates all its wines with minimal intervention.
Located at the base of the picturesque Mount Buller, offering panoramic views of the Victorian countryside, the stunning vineyard produces thirty-one wines over its incredible seventy-acre site. David and winemaker Andy Browning continue to develop the most delicious wines and to create wines with great structure and complexity, aging extremely well.
Delatite Winery’s new cellar door and dining room opened in 2021 and was beautifully designed by Lucy Clemenger Architects. The new building takes advantage of the stunning views over Mount Buller and the Alpine Range. Here, guests can indulge in the estate grown wines and be guided through them by one of the vineyard’s informative cellar door team.
The winery’s beautiful restaurant priorities locally sourced food and focuses on using a seasonal menu. After indulging in the vineyard’s delicious natural wines, guests are invited to enjoy the shared platters offered by the restaurant.
During summer, Delatite Winery offers afternoon estate picnics, where visitors are welcomed to a basketful of fabulous food and a tantalising wine tasting experience. Relax against the backdrop of the beautiful Victorian High Country at one of four of the vineyard’s picnic sites. Enjoy the day picnicking, sampling various wines and basking in the glorious grounds of Delatite Winery.
Tasting Notes
⇐ 2020 Estate Mansfield Red Blend
This tasteful red is the perfect blend of five different red varietals. They are all made separately first and then blended by winemaker Andy and owner David. The inspiration for this style of wine stemmed from a trip to Spain and Portugal by David in 2018. A blend of blackberry and aromatic spice aromas, this wine pairs beautifully with any full flavoured dish.
⇐ 2022 Estate ‘Pet Nat’ Riesling Gewurztraminer
This style of wine is loved by natural wine drinkers and fits perfectly with the ideologies here at Delatite Winery. On the palate this wine is fresh and lifted with a strong citrus. With hints of rose coming through on the mid palate with yeasty characters throughout, this riesling pairs perfectly with pan fried or battered fish.
⇐ 2021 Estate Riesling
The 2021 vintage gave the winery fruit that expressed some of the best characteristics the vineyard has seen recently. Emanating aromas of intense lime and lemon rind with floral hints of lavender, this delicious estate riesling goes down as smoothly as it sounds. With a sweet floral backing and a tight zingy acid finish, this wine is enjoyed best when chilled.
⇐ 2022 Reserve ‘Catherine’s Block’ Gewurztraminer
Picked two weeks later than the rest of the winery’s gewurztraminer, the fruit for the Catherine reserve was extremely ripe and fruitful. With aromas of roses and musk, this gewurz provides luscious flavours of Turkish delight, hints of lychee and lovely clean finish. This sweet wine goes well with deserts and cheeses, the perfect after-dinner drink.
