Robert and Vivienne Ritchie planted their vineyard in 1968 on the family property, nestled within the foothills of Mount Buller, before establishing Delatite Wines in 1982. Their son, David, took over the reins in 2006. The Ritchie family’s century-long connection to the property means that they understand the land; the result is varieties that truly reflect the vineyard’s unique terroir. The dedication to quality in both the vineyard and wine is evident in the many awards the winery has received. Delatite Winery is a 5-red star winery, as rated in the Halliday Wine Companion (since 2009) and has received numerous trophies and medals in various categories in Australian wine shows.
Delatite Winery boasts picturesque views of the mountains in the High Country, with lots of space for children and pets to roam around. The restaurant serves up simple, unassuming food made from fresh and local ingredients. Delatite Wines values sustainable winemaking, with no additives or wild yeast, and offers a range of great events to be enjoyed all year-round.
Recognised for producing delicate, aromatic and elegant varieties, Delatite Wines specialises in white, red, rose, sparkling, ‘natural’ and its schnapps! In particular, the winery produces a delicious honey and saffron gewürztraminer schnapps, a pure gewürztraminer schnapps, and a lemon myrtle schnapps with delicate flavours. All wines are made on-site from hand-picked, estate-grown grapes, wild yeast-only fermentations, and the reds are unfiltered and un-fined. All of the estate and reserve block wines are also vegan friendly, with no fish, milk, or egg products used in the winemaking process.
Visitors are made very welcome at the cellar door, which is open daily for free tastings, and food available from 11:00am. Monthly members/friends tastings, as well as dinners and events, are held at the winery with its spectacular views across the Victorian Alps. A new cellar door and kitchen with inside dining for eighty (and outside for another 100) will open in October 2020.
⇐ 2021 Estate ‘PetNat’ Riesling Gewurztraminer
This sparkling wine is crafted by traditional methods; however, the yeast is left in the bottle leaving the wine with a deposit of natural yeast. It has a nose of lemon and sweet pastry on the palate, and the wine is fresh and lifted with citrus flavour and sweet yeasty characters throughout. A great match with fried or battered fish or mussels.
⇐ 2018 Reserve ‘Polly’s Block’ Chardonnay
Whole bunch pressed and then fermented in a mix of sixty per cent new and 40 per cent older French oak, the wine has flavours of cashews, almond and nectarine on the palate with a long and complex finish hinting at brioche and pastries. Pair this complex chardonnay with crayfish, scallops or a well-baked quiche or cellar for up to fifteen years.
⇐ 2021 Estate Pinot gris
Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, and wild yeast fermented, this pinot gris has aromas of ripe pear with grassy notes and hints of stone fruit. On the palate, this wine has flavours of juicy ripe pear and sweet stone fruit aromatics. Enjoy with full-bodied white meats such as pork or chicken thighs or cellar for five to ten years.
⇐ 2019 Estate ‘MansField’ Five Red
This field blend has been developed in a nod to the delicious multi-varietal blends from Spain. It has aromas of black fruits and sweet vanillin oak. Blackberry and dark fruit characters with sweet oak, spices, and supple tannins dance on the palate. This blend will pair seamlessly with any full flavoured dish and will cellar for ten to fifteen years
