De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate

De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate is home to the winery formerly named Rutherglen Estates and the Tuileries accommodation and restaurant complex. Both businesses were purchased in late 2018 and are a welcome edition for De Bortoli Wines.

Located in the heart of Rutherglen, De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate offers visitors a number of reasons to stay. With the cellar door, art gallery and Tuileries Restaurant all housed within the original 1880’s Seppelt building, the complex is full of character and has become an iconic landmark within the town.

The unique, modern cellar door provides visitors with several options to sample the wide variety of wines produced at the Rutherglen winery, as well as a number of De Bortoli wines from other regions. Options include traditional wine tastings, wine and food pairings such as muscat and cheese flights, and other seasonal offerings such as produce platters matched with particular wines. Guests can enjoy these experiences inside and absorb the ambience of the art gallery surroundings or borrow one of the picnic blankets and hampers and head out onto the lawn for a picnic.

With 185 hectares of vines planted in Rutherglen, De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate intelligently crafts true-to-style, award-winning alternative wine varietals alongside regional favourites such as durif and muscat. The fusion of talent and technology in the winemaking process results in wines of intense varietal flavour, complexity and regional character, each with a personality that reflects the ground from which it came.

Tuileries Restaurant and Boutique Accommodation provide the ideal destination for an overnight escape, with the house specialty being a dinner, bed and breakfast package. Two styles of accommodation are on offer; the ever-popular king-sized vineyard rooms, each with its own balcony overlooking the stunning wedding garden and vineyard, and the one- and two-bedroom units for larger groups. The site also offers a tennis court and pool, and is a short, flat walk to Rutherglen’s main street.

Tuileries Restaurant is one of the most renowned regional restaurants, offering modern Australian cuisine in a relaxed, semi-formal setting. The courtyard cafe is open daily for lunch and offers casual dining both indoors and outdoors.

Tasting Notes

⇐ De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate Renaissance VRM (Viognier Roussanne Marsanne)

This elegant blend is a truly harmonious white wine. On the nose there are delicate touches of honeysuckle and apricot, with flinty notes of tropical fruit bolstered by stylish hints of cedar and toast from premium oak and lees contact. The palate fills the mouth and has a creamy texture and ripe fruit flavours, with enduring citrus and toasty notes on the finish.

⇐ De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate Arneis

Arneis is one of the ‘Italian-style’ white wines within the portfolio. The warm-to-hot days with cool night help maintain the delightful freshness and crispness that makes arneis special. This arneis has a herbaceous and spicy aroma, flavours of almond and pears, a lovely fresh acidity, generous fruit weight on the mid-palate, and a delicate lingering aftertaste. This wine is becoming one of the estate’s favourites.

⇐ De Bortoli Rutherglen Rutherglen Estate Durif

This is another example of the signature full-bodied red wines that the estate has become famous for. It is bold and fruity with firm tannins that enable great ageing. In addition to berry flavours and stewed cherry notes, it shows mixed fruit spice, licorice, chocolate and cedar. Ideally partnered with a robust meat dish or aged cheddar, this wine is enjoyable now and will age very nicely.

⇐ De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate NV Classic Muscat

This luscious fortified wine displays aromas of raisins, toffee, butterscotch, dried fruit and nuts. Traditionally served after dinner, the De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate muscat is undergoing a revolution of sorts, and is proving to be an excellent aperitif and ideal base for cocktails.
