Boat O’Craigo
Boat O’Craigo
Finding its home in one of Victoria’s oldest wine regions, Boat O’Craigo hosts two impressive vineyards within the luscious Yarra Valley, producing a number of varieties including sparkling, pinot grigio, chardonnay, pinot noir and shiraz, but also grüner veltliner, gewürztraminer and grenache. On average, dependant on the season and yields, the magnificent winery produces approximately 65,000 bottles per year.
Named after the Scottish town in which the owner’s ancestors lived, this exquisite, family-owned winery has won numerous awards, standing testament to their excellence. Boat O’Craigo wines are grown across two stunning sites; the Healesville vineyard, which produces 25-acres of white varieties and pinot noir, and the Kangaroo Ground vineyard, which grows 25-acres of red varieties.
Steve and Margaret Graham, the wineries founders, first planted shiraz at Kangaroo Ground in 1998 with the first wine produced being the 2003 Black Cameron Shiraz. Now decades on, it’s Steve and Margaret’s eldest son, Travers Graham, that ensures Boat O’Craigo’s wine continues to flow.
The single vineyard wines are handcrafted from grape varieties chosen specially for each individual site. Vines are cropped at a lower yield to concentrate the flavour of the grapes, which are hand-picked at the optimal time to ensure premium quality and robust character.
The magnificent winery also boasts outdoor dining spaces, allowing for visitors to enjoy the delectable share plates, whilst overlooking the vineyard and the exquisite land beyond all year round. The staff also offer an exclusive wine and chocolate experience for sweet-toothed visitors on site.
With a convenient quarterly wine club, Boat O’Craigo’s premium wines can also be delivered to your door, all with generous discounts. Able to host intimate weddings and functions, let the sublime grounds of Boat O’Craigo transport you to away to pure relaxation.
Tasting Notes
⇐ Sparkling Méthode Traditionelle
This elegant sparkling méthode traditionelle was handcrafted from selected clones of chardonnay and pinot noir from the Healesville vineyard. The wine displays the elegance typical of cool climate sparkling. An alluring bouquet of brioche, fresh dough and citrus blossom give way to fresh nectarine on the palate.
⇐ Black Spur Grüner Veltliner
Similar in profile to Riesling on the nose and palate, but with much more texture. Boat O’Craigo Grüner is grown on the cool climate site at Healesville. The wine begins with aromas of citrus, green apple and spice. The palate has moorish texture, grapefruit and fleshy stone fruit, and a clean fresh finish.
⇐ Kincardine Grenache
With a lifted bouquet of raspberry, blood orange, spice and green olive, the palate has a chalky tannin and a fresh, lively finish. The wine is pressed to seasoned French oak for ten months of maturation, enhancing its distinct raspberry flavours.
⇐ Black Cameron Shiraz
The rare black basalt soils and abundant sunshine make it a unique site for ripening shiraz, which thrives in warmer conditions. This wine expresses flavours of blackberry, cherry, plum, star anise, tapenade and spice with subtle tannins.
