Austin’s Wines
Austin’s Wines is dedicated to growing and producing premium, singlevineyard, wines proudly made for special occasions. Specialising in the production of pinot noir, the range also includes riesling, chardonnay, shiraz, and most recently, limited releases of cuvee and late harvest riesling. In 1982, Pamela and Richard Austin purchased a small 5-acre block in Waurn Ponds, Victoria. Driven by a desire to grow grapes and make wine to be enjoyed with their friends around the dinner table, they planted and developed a vineyard of 3 acres. In 1990 they purchased acreage in the Moorabool Valley and set about planting a new vineyard that has become the heart of Austin’s Wines. Today, Austin’s Wines is owned and operated by second-generation vignerons, Scott and Belinda Austin.
Set across a sprawling 1500-acres, with 150 under vine, Austin’s Wines is nestled in the Moorabool Valley between Ballarat and Geelong. Small, family-run vineyards dominate the area and provide rich and intense low yield fruit – an ideal terroir for producing award-winning wines. While challenging weather conditions make the Moorabool Valley one of the most complex places to make wine, a plentiful supply of irrigation and ideal soil conditions create strong, healthy vines with balanced growth.
The Austin’s Wines philosophy is, and always will be, to create quality wine to be enjoyed with family and friends. This is made possible through the special occasion wine brand, Austin’s, and the mid-tier range, 6Ft6. Both brands have experienced significant growth in recent years.
Austin’s Wines approaches wine – and winemaking – with an innovative, contemporary and authentic attitude in the hope that Austin’s Wines will be wholeheartedly and memorably enjoyed with family and friends. Striving to explore and push the boundaries with wine – in particular through the 6Ft6 brand – Austin’s Wines isn’t shy when it comes to food and cocktail recipes; known recently for delicious frozen wine cocktails such as frose’ or prosecco margarita.
Austin’s Wines has been recognised with several awards and accolades over the years. Most recently these include Austin’s Chardonnay 2018 taking home Best Chardonnay at the Ballarat Wine Show, winning silver at the Geelong Wine Show and bronze at the Australia International Wine Competition and Victorian Wine Show. Similarly, Austin’s Pinot Noir 2018 and Austin’s Late Harvest Riesling 2018 both received gold at the Geelong Wine Show
Tasting Notes
⇐ Austin’s Pinot Noir 2018
Austin’s Pinot Noir is refined and delectable, bursting with lush, textured fruit and savoury oak. The finest barrels and the best areas of the vineyard help produce this complex, well-balanced wine. 2018 marks the vineyard’s twentieth pinot noir vintage, a wine known for its versatility, delicate nuances and silkysmooth texture. Pour into a large round glass to release the aromas and enjoy this ‘nectar of the Gods.
⇐ Austin’s Chardonnay 2018
This award-winning vintage is rich and enticing with flavours of vanilla bean and creamy nougat, a silky-smooth texture with lashings of well-balanced acidity. Limited bottles of this small batch wine have been produced, crafted using hand-picked fruit. Parcels are matured separately in French oak, with only the best barrels blended to produce this premium chardonnay.
⇐ 6Ft6 Pinot Gris 2019
This pinot gris is a fragrant beauty with ripe apple, pear and citrus aromas. Its juicy palate is silky and lush, with just enough clean, crisp acidity to carry those crunchy pear and citrus notes right through. Match it with spicy Asian cuisine or a seafood platter, or try making yourself a delicious pinot gris mojito!
⇐ 6Ft6 Pinot Noir 2018
A classic fruit-driven pinot noir with bright red cherry and raspberry flavours, with just a hint of spice and earthiness upon a silky, sweet palate. This pinot noir is what Austin’s Wines is known and loved for, a wine that is typical of its variety, exhibiting that beautiful spicy cherry flavour you have come to know and love from this grape.
