Combining modern knowledge and traditional methods, Anderson Winery is highly regarded in the Rutherglen region. Though one of the smaller wineries in Rutherglen, Anderson Winery boasts a large range of sought- after wines. Howard Anderson has spent his entire working life in the wine industry, and was a senior winemaker at Seppelt Great Western for 14 years. As winemaker and general manager of Rutherglen’s Jolimont Wines, Howard made the first sparkling white and red wines in North-East Victoria in 1986.

In 1991, Howard purchased 24 hectares of land on Chiltern Road, Rutherglen, before opening the cellar door of Anderson Winery in 1993. Today, Howard is joined by his eldest daughter Christobelle and together they make a formidable father-and-daughter winemaking team. Anderson Winery specialises in sparkling wines, and 2019 marks 48 years of Howard making the variety. Howard and Christobelle’s other passion is full-bodied reds, particularly shiraz and durif, and the winery’s low-yielding, unirrigated vineyard, along with the use of hand picking and gentle basket-pressing, helps to achieve great fruit intensity and richness.

Over the years, the winery has recently won a multitude of awards, which include a trophy for Best Other Red Variety at the 2016 Victorian Wines Show for its 2014 Saperavi, and three trophies at the 2016 Rutherglen Wine Show for its 2013 Verrier Durif Shiraz.

A visit to the Anderson Winery cellar door ensures you enter a working winery where visitors can smell the yeast and see the winemaking equipment for making sparkling wine, and the barrels that hold the current vintage. Visitors to the small, hands-on winery will be greeted by someone directly involved in the winemaking process.

Tasting Notes

2013 Anderson Winery Sparkling Chenin Blanc

Chenin blanc is a white variety that excels in the Anderson Winery vineyard in the Rutherglen region. Made using the traditional method, this sparkling white is crisp, dry, flavoursome and refreshing.

2011 Anderson Winery Sparkling Durif

Howard Anderson started making sparkling reds more than 40 years ago, while he was the winemaker at Seppelt Great Western. This wine
combines his experience with the iconic Rutherglen grape, durif, to make a full-bodied, truly unique and delicious sparkling red.

2013 Anderson Winery Verrier Durif Shiraz

A rich yet smooth red wine with generous dark berry fruit flavours. It is a blend of about two thirds durif and one third shiraz, and the two varieties complement each other beautifully. This wine can be enjoyed now, or cellared for 10 or more years.

2015 Anderson Winery Saperavi

Saperavi is an ancient Georgian red variety that is proving to be well-suited to the Anderson Winery vineyard in Rutherglen. This wine has a deep colour and spicy, earthy dark cherry characters. It was a gold medal winner at the 2017 Saperavi World Prize in Tbilisi, Georgia.
