A Win For The Environment

Silver Spoon Estate is proud to be the worthy recipient of a 2021 Business Excellence Award in the Sustainable and Environmental category. This recognition is well earned by the team at Silver Spoon Estate who have dedicated the past thirteen years to reducing the winery’s carbon footprint by implementing exceptionally sustainable solutions across the property.

Silver Spoon Estate’s most recent environmentally conscious endeavour comes in the form of its new 100 per cent off-grid cellar door in the heart of the Heathcote’s wine region. The cellar door is not only friendly to the earth, but a fantastic new destination to drink award-winning Heathcote wines and relax while overlooking Silver Spoon Estate’s dry-grown ornamental wine garden. Guests can enjoy a delicious lunch cooked on premise, savour an afternoon dessert and wine pairing, or simply watch the resident wildlife graze the land.

Committed to upholding the standard that won its sustainability award, Silver Spoon Estate has recently installed a new solar system commissioned in February 2021 by Sunergy Solar & Batteries. Along with the sustainable cellar door – the winery and founders Peter and Tracie Young’s home on the estate are all powered by sixty-four solar panel – equating to thirty-eight hours of kilowatt battery use. A Lithium Ion battery back-up system and diesel generator power the estate on days when the solar system is low. Silver Spoon Estate has avoided creating 16539kg of CO2 emissions so far and counting!

Other highlights of Silver Spoon Estate’s dedication to sustainability include the gravel mulch project. Created by Peter and Tracie alongside their staff during the COVID-19 2020 lockdown, this strategy was implemented on the eastern vineyard block. The aim was to provide soil moisture retention to support the dry-grown vines through the year with minimal water, whilst retaining any rainfall and protecting the vines from drying out over the summer season. The program has been a great success – the vines under the gravel mulch have increased in grape harvest by forty per cent.

Peter and Tracie Young understand what it means to work and live on the land, and the importance of preserving our precious planet. Silver Spoon Estate’s tireless work toward creating an environmentally friendly business is commendable. Peter and Tracie’s passion to low carbon footprint and regeneration of the land is the true heart of Silver Spoon Estate and will continue to be the winery’s unique point of difference.
