Piano Piano Wines

Nestled in the prestigious “golden mile” of Beechworth, Piano Piano Wines is a boutique, family-owned winery that has thrived for more than twenty years. Since its establishment in 2001, founders Marc Scalzo and Lisa Hernan have dedicated themselves to a masterful focus on chardonnay and shiraz. Currently, with three hectares under vine, Piano Piano offers a deeply personal and intimate wine experience like no other, with five exceptional estate-grown wines produced each year.

The name Piano Piano (“slowly, slowly” in Italian) embodies the patient, hands-on approach Marc and Lisa bring to winemaking. The duo’s journey began with a long-held dream and a shared vision: to craft expressive, single-vineyard wines that reflect the essence of the land. After years of searching, the perfect property was secured – perched at 400m altitude with unparalleled views of Mount Buffalo. The vineyard consists of two blocks: Sophie’s Block Chardonnay, planted in 2006, and Henry’s Block Shiraz, planted in 2008 – both affectionately named after their children.

Piano Piano differentiates itself from the crowd through a sense of place and authenticity. Sophie’s Block, located on a cool south-east facing slope, is close-planted with five different chardonnay clones, intensifying complexity and finesse. Henry’s Block, on a north-east facing slope of decomposed granite loam, delivers elegant, cool-climate shiraz with spice, minerality and structure.

Marc, who began his wine education around the family kitchen table, possesses a wealth of industry knowledge. After earning a science degree and spending five years in the corporate world, he turned to winemaking, studying at Charles Sturt University and working vintages at acclaimed wineries, including Brown Brothers, Giaconda and Seresin Estate in New Zealand. Piano Piano differentiates itself from the crowd through a sense of place and authenticity.

The vineyard’s granitic soils, elevation and microclimate are the perfect storm to craft wines of worldclass purity and character. Visitors can expect a relaxed, scenic tasting experience overlooking the vines – tasting the land, the dedication and the slow, steady passion behind each bottle.
