Spence Wines
Spence Wines
For almost three decades, Spence Wines has delighted wine lovers across Australia with its commitment to passion, precision and place. Established twenty-eight years ago by Peter and Anne Spence, the winery was born from a love of European wine unearthed during an extended trip. After a determined search for the perfect vineyard, the pair settled on a unique property of fifty-one hectares – where every aspect of the terroir, from soil to slope, plays a vital role in the distinctive character of their wines.
Specialising in premium varietals such as shiraz, pinot noir, chardonnay, viognier and sparkling rose, Spence Wines crafts each bottle as a true expression of the vineyard’s conditions: north facing slopes, cool valley nights and red sandy loam soils. These elements, combined with sustainable and biodynamic vineyard practices, contribute to the worldclass balance and flavour complexity of the wines. Every element – from hand pruning and organic treatments to natural fermentation and minimal intervention winemaking – ensures the wines are a pure reflection of the land.
What sets Spence Wines apart is not only the quality of the wine, but also the authenticity of the experience. The premier cellar door sits right next to the vineyard, inviting visitors to taste wines just metres from where the grapes are grown and handpicked. Over the years, Peter and Anne have remained deeply involved in every aspect of the winemaking process, ensuring their vision and values continue to shape each vintage. Their dedication has fostered a loyal following among collectors and wine enthusiasts who appreciate not only the finesse in the glass but also the story behind every bottle.
Reinforcing its commitment to excellence, Spence Wines has received consistent recognition through awards each year, including many from James Halliday. With a focus on bottle-aged releases, the wines are crafted for longevity, making them ideal for cellaring. For those seeking a serene, vineyard-side experience paired with exceptional wine, Spence Wines offers a rare and rewarding destination.
Tasting Notes

⇐ 2023 Viognier
Handpicked, whole bunch pressed, fermented with Indigenous yeast and aged in Amphora on lees. This wine presents apricots, white peach and jasmine with a refined, textured and long finish. Awarded silver medal at the Geelong Show. Given 95 points (2026 review) and special value by James Halliday.

⇐ 2020 Chardonnay
Handpicked, wild-yeast barrel fermentation and ten months in French oak. Carries plenty of flinty complexity ahead of nectarine, peach, citrus and mealy lees characters. Juicy and forthright on the palate, with a little more oak-led grilled nuts and toast before a smooth finish. Pretty stylish.

⇐ 2022 Pinot Noir
Handpicked and fermented using natural yeasts. Has a lovely mix of savoury and spicy notes threaded through plum and black cherry fruit. An excellent cooler year for pinot noir.

⇐ 2019 Shiraz
Handpicked, destemmed and co fermented with 1% viognier. Aged for sixteen months before being bottled. Spice, liquorice and violets on the nose with black fruits and velvety tannins softened nicely with some bottle maturation. Given 95 points from Halliday and awarded a special value wine.
