WILLEM KURT WINES
WILLEM KURT WINES
Perched 600 metres above sea level, Willem Kurt Wines is a boutique, family-owned vineyard just south of the scenic gem of Beechworth. The estate focuses on creating high-quality, premium wine with minimal intervention, harnessing an attentive and respectful approach to viticulture. The vineyard is planted to chardonnay, syrah, vermentino, sangiovese and pinot noir. In the next year, there will be six wines available, as the sangiovese and pinot noir reach maturity.
Willem Kurt Wines was founded in 2012 after owner and winemaker, Daniel Balzer, realised his particular passion for small-scale, hands-on winemaking. In 2014, the first wines were released. In 2017, the label found a home as the purchase of a vineyard site took place. In an incredible feat, by 2022, the entire production of Willem Kurt Wines was proudly estate-grown from a single vineyard. What started as a farm paddock evolved with an impressive pace, transforming into a fruitful vineyard, a provincial winery, and a picturesque planting of trees and native gardens.
The name Willem Kurt is derived from the middle names of owners Marije and Daniel’s two children. With their heritage being of Dutch and German respectively, Willem and Kurt are names that have resurfaced in their families for generations. As a family-owned establishment, the estate prides itself on family roots and the joy of bringing people together.
Willem Kurt Wines embodies both precise finesse and unconstrained character in the growth of its high-quality cool climate grapes. The team approach the task with not only craftsmanship and passion, but with the utmost respect for the land and the environment the fruit springs from, paying close attention to the vineyard through thorough canopy management. The site, although undulating is predominantly southwest facing, and consists of ancient loam soils, flecked with quartz.
Enjoy all the winery has to offer at the stunning cellar door by delighting in wine that bursts with the flavour of the spectacular views. Drink up the best this region has to offer.
Tasting Notes

⇐ Willem Kurt Vermentino
The cool climate region of Beechworth consistently produces vermentino packed with lovely pear, citrus, rose petal and jasmine aromas. The acidity is firm and the palate has a telltale chalky, savoury character. A light, fresh and bright wine that is enjoyable at any time, but also a great food accompaniment.

⇐ Willem Kurt Chardonnay
A stylish and complex chardonnay. Wild ferment in a mix of new and seasoned French oak, with some malo-lactic conversion taking place. This is a wine with elegance and power. Primary fruit characters of citrus and nectarine. Layered flavours of lemon curd and brown spice richness.

⇐ Willem Kurt Rosé
A dry and savoury style rosé, filled with raspberry, strawberry and blood orange flavours. It is textural but still soft. It has lovely length, with a hint of thirst-quenching grip. A perfect wine for a warm afternoon.

⇐ Willem Kurt Syrah
Minimal handling is the key to this medium-bodied syrah, no fining and no filtration. Extended time before pressing helps give the wine complexity and a lovely volume of fine tannins. A meaty, spicy wine with great length on the palate. Fruit flavours of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries.
