Mount Avoca’s Conservation Zone
Following the announcement of “The Pyrenees – Australia’s Newest National Park” in 2023, Mount Avoca has created a 100-acre Conservation Zone that links up with the Pyrenees parks.
Privately managed but open to the public with a focus on education and recreation, this initiative is set to transform the visitor experience at Mount Avoca, offering a haven of natural beauty and exploration for all visitors.
The area will be a case study in how land damaged by gold mining in the 1850s didn’t recover for more than 150 years after sheep were allowed to graze on the land. Removing these introduced farm animals has encouraged regrowth of various native plants and after only twenty years the land has totally transformed. This transformation will continue, and Mount Avoca has already partnered with Landcare to evaluate the plants growing, and Dja Dja Wurrung to investigate healing Djandak through Galkangu. Projects include forest gardening and low temperature burns to assist in the healing of the land.
Mount Avoca has created some amazing mountain bike trails and walking tracks from the cellar door and Eco-Luxe accommodation through the park linking to the waterfalls, offering amazing views across the region. There is also a gravel-bike track from Mount Avoca to the Moonambel wineries, and the Mount Cole walks are spectacular. The best way to discover all of these activities is with the Visit Pyrenees app.
