From Coast to Toast
The Geelong and Bellarine wine region, located southwest of Melbourne along the coast, is celebrated for its homegrown, family-run wineries and stunning natural landscapes. While the area consistently produces high-quality maritime wines, it’s the evocative stories and dedicated people behind the vineyards that truly set it apart. Wineries of Victoria’s Hannah McDonald sits down with June O’Brien, owner and director of Epic Taste Experiences, to explore the beauty and authenticity of this growing region.
O’Brien possesses a rich tapestry of passions: travel, food, wine, storytelling and bringing people together. So, the creation of Epic Taste Experiences was a natural next step. With more than thirty years of experience in travel, tourism and hospitality, she set out to craft a wine touring company that was personal, curated and expertly attuned to the hidden gems of the region. “Our tours are experiences. We love connecting guests with local makers, sharing incredible flavours and uncovering the stories behind the tastes of the region and the terroir that shape them,” she says.
For O’Brien, the region is so much more than the taste of the wines, it’s a place ripe for connection. “What I think sets Geelong, the Bellarine, Moorabool Valley and the Surf Coast apart is the combination of cool-climate elegance, coastal beauty and a deep sense of authenticity. But it’s more than just what’s in the glass. Many of the wineries are still family-owned, and there’s a genuine connection between the land, the people and the wine. Visitors often get to meet the winemakers, walk the vineyards and hear the stories that shaped each vintage. It’s personal, down-to-earth and full of heart,” she observes.
ROOTED IN PLACE
The region explored by Epic Taste Experiences is an endlessly fascinating landscape for both wine enthusiasts and those who are fresh to viticulture. O’Brien explains, “I think all the growers in this region will tell you that we’re incredibly lucky to have three distinct sub-regions here – each with its own personality. From the coastal vineyards influenced by sea breezes and salt air to the rich volcanic soils inland, and the limestone and basalt foundations that run through parts of the Bellarine and Moorabool Valley – it’s a diverse and fascinating wine landscape.” The unique environment and visionary winemakers craft wines that seamlessly blend tradition with innovation, establishing it as a destination renowned for its distinctive charm and character. “This region enjoys a unique combination of coastal and inland climates, which creates ideal conditions for elegant cool-climate varietals like pinot noir, shiraz and chardonnay. There’s a strong European influence in the winemaking, but what I love is seeing producers experiment – branching out into international styles and alternative varieties,” she relates.
When it comes to this region, there’s more than meets the eye – especially in the lesser-known but richly rewarding areas. “What’s interesting is how many hidden gems (over 150 vineyards and around sixty-three wineries) are tucked away across Geelong, the Bellarine, Moorabool Valley, and the Surf Coast each with its own unique character, history and sense of place. These are the kinds of places that don’t always shout the loudest, but they absolutely deserve to be seen, tasted and celebrated,” she asserts.
Beyond the vines and cellar doors, there’s a rising energy in the region – one that’s shining a light on talented makers and fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual support. O’Brien expands, “It’s starting to become a must-visit destination for wine lovers and growers alike – offering not just exceptional wine, but rich stories, down-to-earth hospitality and a strong sense of place. There’s a wonderful momentum building and being part of a community that’s coming together – sharing ideas, collaborating and lifting one another up – is exactly what makes this region so special.”
EPIC BY DESIGN
At the heart of O’Brien’s tours is a deep commitment to personalisation – crafting wine journeys that are as unique as the guests themselves. “All our Epic Taste Experiences are personalised and curated to suit the guests. We start with what they enjoy drinking – whether it’s pinot noir, shiraz, chardonnay, or something more adventurous – and build the tour around their tastes. Along the way, we include handpicked, family-owned wineries and showcase local artisan producers and food experiences that reflect the flavour of the region. It’s always a tailored journey, filled with thoughtful introductions, good food and memorable moments behind the scenes,” she lists. For O’Brien, the true magic lies in forging lasting connections with the land, the winemakers, and the stories that bring it all to life. “I hope visitors walk away with more than just great wine – they leave with a genuine connection to the region.

It’s the stories, the people, and the warm hospitality that I hope stays with them. Whether it’s chatting with a winemaker, discovering a family-run farm, or tasting something they’ve never had before, it’s about creating memories that feel personal and meaningful,” she identifies.
BEYOND THE BOTTLE
From seasonal festivals to immersive tastings, the region’s events bring the community together and showcase its strengths. “Our region boasts a vibrant calendar of wine events that draw enthusiasts from across Victoria and beyond. Highlights include the Winter Shiraz Festival, Pinot Affair, and Toast to the Coast in October – all celebrating our cool-climate varietals with food pairings, live music and immersive vineyard experiences. These festivals don’t just attract visitors – they build community, foster collaboration and shine a well-deserved spotlight on Greater Geelong region,” she argues.

While the wine is a major drawcard, the region offers so much more – blending natural beauty, culinary delights and laidback charm into an ideal getaway. “There’s so much more to enjoy beyond the wineries – coastal walks, local markets, art galleries, boutique shopping, and even a round of golf or a relaxing spa day. When it comes to dining, we’re spoiled with incredible cafes, restaurants and local chefs. It’s hard to pick just one! That’s where we come in. Book an experience with us, and we’ll personally introduce you to the people, places and plates that make this region unforgettable,” she concludes.
