The Purbrick Family’s One Hundred Year Legacy
The Purbrick family has lived, worked and led Victoria’s oldest family-owned winery, Tahbilk, for five generations. The winery was established in 1860, the Purbrick family took ownership in 1925. The family are now celebrating an incredible 100 years of ownership in 2025. This anniversary will be celebrated with more than 100 events taking place over the course of the milestone year.
Whilst it’s all about celebration, there are some serious learnings, legacies and future plans that the family are keen to share. Fourth generation winemaker Alister Purbrick has been at the helm since 1974 and though semi-retired, he still lives on the estate, is a board member and is part of the Family Council. The responsibility as custodians of the land is not lost on Alister and discussion with the broader family about the future of Tahbilk, its wines, land and legacy continue to be front and centre in his and the family’s mind.
A new limited-edition range of wines has been released to mark the milestone, and there is something for everyone. The Centennial Range features limited museum releases, including sparkling marsanne, riesling, marsanne, old block cabernet, old block shiraz and a fortified shiraz. The range highlights the varieties that the estate does best, with marsanne and shiraz at its heart. The estate boasts one of the largest plantings and oldest marsanne vines (1927) in the world, rivalling many in its spiritual home of the Rhone Valley in France.
