Thirty Years of Anderson Winery
Anderson Winery opened its cellar door for the first time on the March long weekend in 1993. Howard Anderson had already been a winemaker for over twenty-five years before that, but by the early 90’s he made the leap in his career and went out on his own.
All Anderson Winery’s 1990’s vintage wines were made by Howard from purchased local grapes, as the Anderson vineyard didn’t come into production until the year 2000 due to unfortunate weather conditions. In 1991, Howard made his first batch of wine to be released under the Anderson label, using purchased grapes and the facilities of another local winery. In 1992, Howard planted the first hectare of shiraz vines and built a winery on his newly purchased property, where the cellar door still sits today. In 1999, Howard planted one hectare each of durif and petit verdot in his vineyard, followed in 2007 by small parcels of tempranillo, saperavi, muscat, chenin blanc and viognier, making the vineyard now total 8.8 hectares.
Now, all Anderson Winery’s wines are one hundred per cent grown and made on site in small batches by Howard and his daughter Christobelle, who has been with him in the winery since 2006. Recent initiatives for the winery include creating a new dry sparkling white wine made from chenin blanc and dry muscat, purchasing an amphora to age their saperavi wine, and preparing for both their vineyard and winery to be certified sustainable – which the company plans to come into effect from the 2024 vintage.
